What is Windows

Windows is an operating system (OS). It is similar to the MAC and Linux operating systems in that it is the software that makes your computer hardware work. For example, your DVD and hard drives would not work if it were not for the Windows operating system. Within the Windows Operating System are main areas such as the Windows Desktop, Start menu, Task Manager, System Tray and Windows File Explorer. Programs such as Internet Explorer and Firefox allow you to go to the Internet or "World Wide Web (www). Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook are able to run under the Windows operating system. Activities you can do with the Windows operating system and its' programs include but are not limited to emailing friends, writing and printing documents such as letters, exploring the Internet, Instant Messaging Friends, scanning and reading, listening to books and music, and watching movies. You can do your homework, write a report, and email it to your teacher or boss. You can access and take online classes, work remotely, while at your home, on a bus, train or plane, or in a hotel. You can record with Windows, create music lists, and even talk with friends by using programs such as Skype. Banking and shopping on the Internet allow you to pay bills, order pizza to be delivered, and buy items. You can even sync your smart phone to your Windows operating system through programs such as iTunes, or Windows sync programs. Windows can be found on tower, laptop, tablet and smart phone hardware.
